Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu played in central defence in the Nations League against Finland and held strong as his team won a late victory in Helsinki on Friday night.
Ampadu gave a man of the match performance for Wales and reminded everyone of his qualities, after his loan spell last season that had minimal action.
Ampadu has been unable to break through in the Chelsea team since making a much publicised move from Exeter in 2016. His loan move to RB Leipzig last season didn’t work out too well, and he could be set for another loan spell away from the club next season.
With Chelsea signing Thiago Silva to help the defence next season, it further shows that there will be no place for Ampadu in the Chelsea team next season.
Wales manager Ryan Giggs believes Thiago Silva’s addition could help bring valuable addition to the youngster’s development, but has urged Ampadu to search for more playing time as he also admits that there is no substitute for playing regularly – which he won’t be guaranteed at Stamford Bridge.
“Thiago is a quality centre-half and you can only learn from someone like that,” Giggs told reporters ahead of Wales’ upcoming UEFA Nations League clash with Bulgaria.
“I want all the players to be playing regularly, but that sometimes isn’t the case.
“It’s that balance over whether they’re at a top club and surrounded by top players and improving every day, but ultimately you need minutes on the pitch.
“That’s a decision for Ethan. I’ve talked to him a lot about that.
“I think last year was maybe a little bit different as he had injuries. You could see from the game he played against Tottenham in the Champions League he was outstanding.
“Nothing fazes him, he’s a quality player, and he just needs to keep fit now.”
