Chelsea have made six major signings to strengthen the first team, with deals for Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva and most recently Kai Havertz.
The last icing on the cake for the Blues will be the signing of a goalkeeper, and Chelsea have reportedly made huge progress in the bid to sign Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
Chelsea have entered negotiations with Rennes and are now close to finalising an £18.2 million deal for the Senegalese shot-stopper, with Frank Lampard keen on a new goalkeeper to push current first choice Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The deal for Mendy could eventually increase to £25m after add-ons are included, according to The Guardian. This will be a very profitable deal for Rennes who signed Mendy from Stade Reims for £3.5m just last year.
Former Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech had revealed in August that Kepa won’t be leaving the club this summer, but he also admitted that the Blues might end up signing a new goalkeeper.
“Kepa struggled last season, that is unquestionable,” said Cech.
“But the club invested in him and gave him a long-term contract because they believe he has the qualities and attributes to be successful.
“Additions will be made to the squad, perhaps even in goal, and this is what is being discussed now.
“But nobody is giving up on Kepa and we all hope he has a great future.”
