Ruben Loftus-Cheek struggled yet again in Chelsea’s opening game of the season, as the Blues defeated Brighton 3-1 at the Amex Stadium on Monday night.
It wasn’t a good performance for Loftus-Cheek in what was his third start of the year, having been sidelined for 13 months after suffering an Achilles injury in May 2019.
Loftus-Cheek looked rusty and short of match fitness. The 24-year-old hasn’t been able to pick back his form since returning from the long-term injury, and former England Internationals Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher, blasted his performance against Brighton, with Gary Neville insisting that Lampard should sell him.
Speaking after Chelsea’s win at Brighton, Manchester United and England legend Gary Neville said on Sky Sports: “I thought, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, he’s been given his chance.
“I thought he was really disappointing. I don’t think Loftus-Cheek can complain. He’s been given games.
“I don’t think he’s ever grasped his chance yet. There’s going to come a point when they’re going to cash in and get £25million for him.”
Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher, revealed that Loftus-Cheek should have grabbed his opportunities well, as he added: “When he was at Crystal Palace you thought ‘what a player’.
“He’s got to say he wants to play every single week. He’s not grabbed his chance tonight.
“If you get your chance you have to grab it. He’s had his chances now.”
