Ruben Loftus-Cheek was the first player to be subbed off for Chelsea in the game against Brighton, as he was taken off for Ross Barkley in the 61st minute.
It was the first game of the season for Chelsea, and Frank Lampard included the 24-year-old in his starting line-up.
It wasn’t a good performance for Loftus-Cheek in what was his third start of the year, having been sidelined for 13 months after suffering an Achilles injury in May 2019.
Frank Lampard came to his defence as he admitted that the midfielder is yet to pick back his best form since returning from injury.
“With Ruben obviously he’s been out for a long time, even his return to play was pretty broken by lockdown and the restart when he was just about to play some games,” Lampard said after the game.
“We certainly have to give Ruben a bit of time on those fronts. But it’s a position Ruben can play for us. Yeah, we’ve got injuries in forward areas in terms of Ziyech is out, Pulisic is out as well, there are players who will come back who will give me lots of options.
“It was interesting for me to see Ruben in that No.10 position today. He can certainly give us lots in those areas.”
