Chelsea managed to finish in fourth place last season, as Frank Lampard’s side seemed to endure a tough battle with Leicester City and Manchester United in the race for top four.
Lampard’s fourth place finish was seen as a decent achievement last season, due to the lack of transfers coupled with the loss of Eden Hazard.
However, with the massive signings that have been made this summer, Lampard will not be expected to finish in fourth place, as the Blues board will be expecting him to close the gap on the top two at least.
Lampard himself has admitted that the expectation for this season is different.
He said: “Normally with new faces, you get a month or so of pre-season to work on your patterns of play and how you want to play so we have to have time. Every team that is successful in the modern day has had time and a process so now our process starts here.
‘Last year was a squad where we couldn’t do much business so we worked and worked to come fourth. Now it’s a new start – our objectives are higher, our expectations are higher and that’s fine. It will take some time but today I saw a lot of character and spirit.”
