Chelsea have had some African greats feature at one time or another at the club, and at one time, four of Africa’s best talents were featuring for the Blues – Didier Drogba, Michael Essien, John Mikel Obi and Salomon Kalou.
Cameroon great Samuel Eto’o will eventually play for the Blues for just a season, in the latter part of his career.
In his first exclusive interview with the club, new Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy who hails from Senegal, has vowed to toe the line of success that the African greats had at the club.
He said: “Of course. Most of the biggest African talent has played for this team. Drogba, Essien, Eto’o, Mikel. When you see that, you want to continue it.
“Regarding the goalkeeper, I am the first, so it really makes me very proud, and it’s also a big responsibility.”
Mendy was also pleased that legendary Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech called him while the transfer process was ongoing.
He said: “Yes, he called me while the transfer was ongoing and reassured me. It was great to have someone from the club speak to me. It showed me they really wanted me, and it was really appreciated.”
