Chelsea started the season with a 3-1 win over Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Monday night. But the Blues will have a much bigger test this weekend.
Chelsea play reigning champions Liverpool, at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon, and many eyes will be on Frank Lampard’s side, to see what the Blues can do with their new signings.
Paul Merson has been full of praise for new Chelsea signing Timo Werner, and the 24-year-old impressed in his debut game, despite not getting on the scoresheet.
Merson expects Werner to be a handful for the Liverpool defence, and he also believes that the German international has what it takes to win the Golden Boot.
Writing in his latest column for Daily Star, Merson praised Werner as he wrote: “Chelsea have got to make a statement against Liverpool this weekend and with Timo Werner they just might!
“You would not want to be marking Werner if you were a defender. He is a prime example to any young player. He is always on the move, always making runs, and he consistently makes unselfish runs too to free up space for others.
“I can’t see how he’s not going to score loads of goals for Chelsea. He will play every week. He’s got to be a contender for the Golden Boot. Werner will give Liverpool a test.
“I think both teams would take a draw right now because you can’t afford to lose too many games if you want to win the league. But Chelsea have to go for it and lay down a marker. They have made some great signings, now it’s time to show what they are made of.”
