Chelsea got off to a winning start in the first Premier League game of the season, with Timo Werner and Kai Havertz making their debut for the club.

Despite the victory, there’s still a lot to improve on.

See the player ratings below

Kepa: Barely had any save to make. Should have done better to save the goal scored by Leandro Trossard. 5/10

Reece James: Good game. Scored a stunning strike to put Chelsea back in the lead, was solid defensively and still did well when moved to midfield position. 8/10

Christensen: Very good performance; read the game well, made some crucial interception, was calm and collected and his positioning was good. Very mature performance. 7/10

Zouma: The Blues defence still looked shaky, but the Frenchman did well to get a goal and did well in defence. 7/10

Alonso: Had a difficult game against Tariq Lamptey, as the former Chelsea right-back kept at him almost the entire game. Didn’t have the opportunity to go forward as he’d have liked. 5/10

Jorginho: Scored a good penalty to ease the pressure on the team. Didn’t boss the midfield as he’d expect. 6/10

Kante: Got a huge test from Bissouma, but he put in a good shift nevertheless. Worked hard but still not at his best. 6/10

Mount: Worked his socks off and looked lively at times. Tried to show that he wasn’t bullied by the new signing, Kai Havertz. Impressive shift. 6/10

Kai Havertz: Very quiet performance until he was subbed off on the 80th minute. Lost the ball too easily at times and could not cope with the pace of the game. Laid one good pass to Werner in the first half. 4/10

Loftus-Cheek: Still not yet at his best. Couldn’t move quickly with the ball and failed to release Werner on time in one quick counter attack. 4/10

Werner: Explosive performance. His pace was always a threat. Won the penalty for his side and kept the Brighton defence on their toes. 7/10

Barkley: Came on shortly after the hour mark in place of Loftus-Cheek. Helped control the midfield better, but was unable to tee Werner properly at one time. Almost cost the team with some misplaced passes. 5/10

Hudson-Odoi: Looked bright as he came on with ten minutes left. 5/10

Azpilicueta: Late sub for Jorginho.
