According to Daily Mirror, Chelsea will step up attempts to land keeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes this week as the Blues look for a rival to Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Blues have settled on signing the Rennes goalkeeper after considering moves for Jan Oblak of Atletico Madrid, Ajax’s Andre Onana, Burnley ’s Nick Pope, Borussia Dortmund’s Roman Burki and Mike Maignan of Lille.
The pursuit of Mendy has been masterminded by Chelsea’s technical director Petr Cech, who played for Rennes before his move to Stamford Bridge in 2004.
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is keen on signing a new goalkeeper this summer after losing faith in Kepa Arrizabalaga last season. Lampard dropped the Spaniard several times last season after a series of poor performances for the Blues.
After links with a move back to Spain, the £72million stopper made a u-turn and revealed that he wants to stay in London and fight for his place.
Mendy will cost Chelsea around £18million as owner Roman Abramovich continues to back Lampard in the transfer market.
Chelsea have spent more than £200million on transfers this summer already.
