Chelsea have been linked with West Ham midfielder Declan Rice all summer, and the former Chelsea academy product seems to be the missing piece left in Frank Lampard’s squad.
Despite all the signings made so far, Frank Lampard is still keen on signing a new defensive midfielder.
Lampard wants a deep playmaker in that defensive midfield position – someone who can defend and also start the attack with a nice range of passing, a quality he doesn’t see in Jorginho and N’Golo Kante.
Lampard is still keen on playing Kante higher up the pitch, and see Rice as the missing piece in his team.
With the loan exit of Ross Barkley to Aston Villa, former West Ham winger Trevor Sinclair believes that the Hammers midfielder could be on his way to Chelsea, and that Chelsea might have freed up their wage bills to accommodate Rice.
“One of the biggest problems for football clubs is week-to-week wages,” former Hammers star Sinclair told talkSPORT on recruitment business among the Premier League elite.
“So getting Ross Barkley off the wages to bring in Declan Rice makes sense, unfortunately.”
