English managers do not have a good record in the Champions League, and surprisingly Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is the first and currently the only English manager to have two CL campaigns to his managerial career.
Lampard also revealed that he’s surprised about this record and has vowed to do his best, while also hoping for the best for English coaches.
Lampard said: “Don’t feel there’s a responsibility of the English managers union but I was surprised by the stat myself. At end of my career heard a lot about a merry go round but I think it’s different now. Hopefully more opportunities for English coaches. Sometimes we can have managers at home who can do the job as well.
“Not thinking of myself as a standard-bearer but will do the job as well as I can.”
Speaking about the criticisms he faced when he became Chelsea manager, Lampard said l: “When I got this job a lot of people were questionining it, asking if I am sure I want to take it. People can be very quick to form opinions straight away.
“Some of it I understand but we have to judge people on face value. I was proud of what we achieved last season by finishing in top four. I can’t get swung on opinion. If you look at all of them and read it will affect you every day.”
