Chelsea manager Frank Lampard seemed to get the best out of Jorginho at the start of last season, as the Italy international was even named as the team’s vice-captain.
However, the deep line playmaker lost steam at some point last season, and he even lost his place in the Chelsea squad.
Lampard was strongly linked with a move for West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, as the Chelsea boss needed a playmaker in that position who was good on the ball and who could defend as well.
Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, who was assistant to former Blues boss Maurizio Sarri, has told Lampard how to get the best out of Jorginho.
Zola believes Jorginho has been given him too much ‘defensive responsibility’, and that he needs to play in the right role and system to thrive.
He told Sky Sports: “With Jorginho, it depends on what type of football you want to play.
“If you want to play possession where you have the ball all the time and you play a lot of passes, there are not many as good as him around.
“If you ask Jorginho to cover 50 metres of the pitch in width and get all the balls back, it’s going to be difficult.”
“Jorginho is not a player that has a lot of physicality and mobility but he is very intelligent and is always in the right place,” Zola added.
“If you have someone who can help him, he can make a big difference. It’s just about getting the best out of him.”
