According to Spanish media outlet Mundo Deportivo, made an approach to sign Marc-Andre ter Stegen from Barcelona before deciding to sign Edouard Mendy from Rennes.
Chelsea were linked with the Barcelona stopper during the summer transfer window and Mundo Deportivo has now claimed the Blues were indeed interested in signing the German goalkeeper.
The report claims Ter Stegen and not Mendy was Chelsea’s first choice after Chelsea boss Frank Lampard made signing a goalkeeper during the summer a top priority.
Kepa Arrizabalaga had failed to convince Lampard that he’d be the regular first-choice goalkeeper moving forward during Lampard’s first season in charge.
The report claims Chelsea tried to convince Ter Stegen not to sign a renewal at Barcelona, with the 28 year old having just two years left in his contract.
