Chelsea boss Frank Lampard named a back line that seemed to favour new goalkeeper signing Edouard Mendy, as the Blues goalkeeper could easily communicate with his defenders through French.

Cesar Apzilicueta, Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma all speak French, and Mendy whose first language is French, was heard speaking to the trio in French as Chelsea defeated Crystal Palace 4-0.

Reacting to his defenders speaking French instead of English, Lampard said: “I don’t know about Ben learning it, it’s been a long time since I learned French at school.

“I think it’s a position we’re in at the moment. Edou speaks good English as well to be fair.

“I think it makes sense obviously with Kurt and Thiago in front of him that he can speak French, Azpi does as well. I think we’ll get there very quickly with that.

“The organisation and focus of the back four plus Edou was very good today, regardless of language and that was a big bonus for us.

“We’re bringing new players into the team, the back five is where you want to be solid, you want to see if it settles very quickly and today it looked good.”

Lampard will be pleased with the clean sheet, the first for the Blues in the new Premier League season.

  4. The game was not bad, but I thought we need to play more pressing even if we don’t have the ball at our opponent area.
