Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is a big admirer of West Ham midfielder Declan Rice, who came through the academy at Chelsea but was released at age 14.
His performances for West Ham has ensured Rice force his way into not only Gareth Southgate’s England squad but his starting XI.
Rice’s consistent performances for West Ham in the Premier League made him one of Lampard’s key targets for the summer and it was expected Chelsea will submit a bid for the player on transfer deadline day.
Despite spending about £250million on new players, the Blues didn’t submit a bid for Rice.
According to Football London, Chelsea didn’t submit a bid for Rice on transfer deadline day due to the club’s inability to offload unwanted members of the squad.
Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri all stayed at Stamford Bridge despite efforts to move them on and make space in the side, while also ideally helping to raise funds.
Chelsea are expected to submit a bid for Rice next summer when the club has been able to move on players not wanted by the club.
