Thiago Silva has become a mainstay in the Chelsea defence since joining the club as a free agent from PSG.
Chelsea have kept five clean sheets in their last six games and that defensive solidity is no small part down to Silva’s quality and leadership.
The Brazilian has been a calming and commanding influence at the back for Chelsea, and has also developed a strong defensive partnership with Kurt Zouma that has seen the pair keep out all but one of every opponent they have faced so far in all competitions this season.
Interestingly, Frank Lampard has confirmed that Silva won’t feature in this weekend’s Premier League clash against Newcastle.
Lampard said in his press conference: “Thiago Silva has just landed and messaged me this afternoon so he probably won’t be going to Newcastle because of the length of his journey and timings.”
This weekend’s clash away at Newcastle will be a huge test for Frank Lampard and his team, and the Blues may have to do it without the impressive Thiago Silva.
Kurt Zouma has been impressive this season, and Edouard Mendy has also been a class act in goal. But can the Chelsea defence cope without Silva? That’s the question Lampard will want to answer on Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off.
