Chelsea signed Petr Cech from Rennes back in 2004, for a meagre fee of £7m, and Cech went on to become one of the best goalkeepers the Premier League has ever seen.

Following Kepa Arrizabalaga’s inability to convince in the Chelsea goalpost, Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes during the summer transfer window, for around £22m.

Following Mendy’s impressive start to life as Chelsea’s number one, Blues fans have now joked that the club should only sign keepers from Rennes.

A Chelsea fan tweeted: “After Mendy retires we want whichever keeper Rennes has at that time.”

Another fan even went as far as rating him better than Liverpool’s Alisson: “Mendy > Alisson.”

Mendy became the first keeper to keep a clean sheet in his first three Premier League appearances for Chelsea, since another former Rennes man, Petr Cech in August 2004.
