Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic was named Chelsea’s player of the year in the 2019/20 campaign but it’s been a different story for the midfielder this season.
The Croatian international was a key part of Frank Lampard’s first season in charge of the Blues but has struggled to get regular game time this season.
Kovacic has started just two Premier League games, with another appearance off the bench and starting one of the two Champions League games.
When Lampard has used the 4-2-3-1 formation, he has preferred N’Golo Kante and Jorginho in central midfield and the recent switch to a 4-3-3 formation is set to hurt Kovacic’s chances as Lampard prefers a midfield trio of Kante, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount.
Lampard revealed after the 3-0 victory over Burnley that he loves the balance the team had and this could mean more time on the bench for Kovacic.
