Timo Werner missed two big chances in the game against Rennes, but Olivier Giroud spared his blushes, by scoring from his rebound.
In the fourth minute, Callum Hudson-Odoi put the ball on a platter for Werner, but the German international uncharacteristically sent the ball well over the bar.
Werner also missed two glorious chances in the Premier League game against Newcastle last weekend, and was on the missing side yet again at Roazhon Park.
Speaking after the game, Blues boss Frank Lampard came to the defence of Werner as he revealed that he has understood his teammates and they in turn have understood his runs to feed him with some good passes.
Asked whether Werner’s early miss shows there’s room for improvement, Lampard responded: “I don’t know, he’s scored a lot of goals already and he’s adapting to a new league.
“The chance today, Timo wants to score that but the ball’s bobbling as it comes along and I know myself that those finishes look a lot easier from afar than they always are.
“I think it’s just normal that a player of Timo’s quality and where he is that he’s going to get even better, because he’s a top-class player.
“I’ve been really happy with him since he’s got here.
“He’s feeling his team-mates and his team-mates are feeling him, hence he’s getting in positions to score in every game.
“So more goals will come as a progression from that.”
