Former Chelsea defender Scott Minto made a bogus claim when he said that Edouard Mendy has been the best signing of all the six new players that joined the club during the summer transfer window.
Frank Lampard made seven summer additions to the first team during the summer, with Malang Sarr joining Porto on loan.
The signings made by the Blues boss was very strategic as he signed players in key positions that were faulty last season.
Chelsea needed a top class goalkeeper and he signed Edouard Mendy who has been phenomenal. The left-back spot was a problem last season and he signed Ben Chilwell who has been very impressive.
Chelsea’s defence has been hailed of late, and you can’t fail to talk about Thiago Silva’s impact. Kai Havertz was signed to bring a creative spark in the attacking midfield, and Hakim Ziyech was brought in to strengthen the flanks, especially with the departure of Willian and Pedro. Timo Werner has already earned the nickname Turbo Timo, and has so far scored 8 goals in 12 Chelsea appearances.
Choosing the best so far might be a difficult task, knowing that all have been very impressive. But take a look at Minto’s comment and tell us what you think.
Former Blues defender Minto told talkSPORT: “If you had said to me at the end of last season that Chelsea could only make one signing – and obviously they have made quite a lot and spent a good amount of money – I would have said it would be in goal.
“I’m surprised it took this long to get Edouard Mendy in – only the hierarchy at Chelsea know why.
“Even when Kepa has had chances this season, I think he has looked shaky and he has made mistakes.
“I can tell you as a full-back that when you have got a really strong, confident goalkeeper who will come out and make good saves, it gives you confidence yourself.
“I would say so far, and I love the look of Ziyech as well, that Edouard Mendy – with five clean sheets in six games – has been the star signing at the moment.
“The confidence he gives is what Chelsea needed. They needed clean sheets, that is what they are getting at the moment, and now they can concentrate on going forward because they have got so much talent there.”
