Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the first goal for Chelsea in the 2-1 win over Rennes on Tuesday evening.
Hudson-Odoi made a fine run during a counterattacking move, and fellow academy product Mason Mount supplied a fine pass from deep for the Chelsea youngster who scored with ease.
The run was typical of Timo Werner, and former Chelsea star Joe Cole believes that Hudson-Odoi must have learnt from the new signing.
Joe Cole said while on BT Sport: “He’s taking [his chance]. What he’s doing, I feel like he’s probably looked at Werner and looked at why he scores goals. His runs in behind, he times his runs well and he’s adding that to his game.”
Unfortunately, Werner himself failed to convert two glittering chances against Rennes despite having positioned himself to receive a pass.
Meanwhile, Frank Lampard was full of praise for Hudson-Odoi’s performance after the game.
He said: “He is still a developing player to a degree. The bit of quality he shows with the first two touches before he got his shot away was top class. I know he can do that. There are loads of great things about Callum, and I know there are things he can improve in his game. He knows that.
“He is a big player for Chelsea, he has a big future with us. His all-round game was fantastic, and he gets his goal.”
