Chelsea youngster Callum Hudson-Odoi scored the first goal for Chelsea in the 2-1 win against Rennes, and also had a decent game.
The 20-year-old hasn’t had much playing opportunities this season, and his stock has dropped since suffering an Achilles injury in 2019.
Frank Lampard decided to hand Hudson-Odoi a start in the Champions League game against Rennes, and he took the opportunity very well with a well taken goal from a swift counter.
However, Hudson-Odoi was warned before the game by former Chelsea star Joe Cole, on what he needs to do to keep his place in a star studded team.
With Chelsea now full of a star-studded team following a massive summer outlay, Joe Cole believes Hudson-Odoi must now regain back his form and shouldn’t settle to be a super sub.
Cole told BT Sport: “That’s the nature of the beast when you’re at a big club players are going to come in through the doors. Havertz has come in, Ziyech has come in putting pressure on him.
“With Callum he had the Achilles injury and with that it takes time especially if you’re a player who relies on their instincts and speed. He’s improving, he was fantastic for the England Under-21s last week he’s well beyond that level.
“If I was coaching him you give him that patience but you try and give him that motivation to look at Havertz who is Germany’s No.10, you look at Werner, you’ve got to get to that level to play at Chelsea.
“He’s a fantastic lad, he works hard he’s part of that great academy that’s come through. It’s a big game for him tonight because he doesn’t want to be labelled as a super-sub.
“You want to establish yourself and for him to go forward and become the player we think he can, he needs to keep working at it improve his performances after his Achilles injury and he’ll be fine.”
