Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes for £22m, and the 28-year-old spent only a year with Rennes, in a career that hit an upward trajectory over the past four years.
Mendy hails from Senegal, and Rennes went ahead to sign his replacement from Senegal, as they opted for the African nation’s number two goalkeeper.
Rennes bought Alfred Gomis from Dijon to replace Mendy, with Gomis having benefitted from an injury to Mendy before Senegal’s third group stage game in the 2019 African Cup of Nations, and was in goal on their run to the final.
Gomis has revealed that he sought the advice of Mendy before joining Rennes. The two Senegal goalkeepers will now face each other tonight.
“I talked a bit with Edou before signing for Rennes,” Gomis revealed.
“He’s a really good guy. He told me there was a great locker room, that we worked hard during the week and that we had a lot of fun on the weekends.”
