Anytime Chelsea play Tottenham, it is always a special occasion, but yesterday’s draw at Stamford Bridge was even more special as it marked Roman Abramovich’s 1000th game as Chelsea owner.
The Russian took over the club in 2003, and has invested heavily in the club over the past few years.
Roman Abramovich ownership took Chelsea to a new era of success, that has included five Premier League triumphs and the Champions League.
Before the game, Chelsea boss Frank Lampard, who played for the club under Roman Abramovich era, has thanked the Russian for his investment in the club.
“As a manager and a player who was involved in a lot of those games I can give him nothing but a huge thank you because nothing we have achieved in the Roman Abramovich era could have been achieved without him or his support,” Lampard said in his pre-match press conference.
“Firstly a financial input but also the development of the training ground and also the love and time put into the academy. And the trophies we have been able to win have been made possible because of him.”
It is estimated that Abramovich has spent nearly £2bn on the club since he took over ownership 17 years ago. Just this summer transfer window alone, the Russian billionaire spent close to £230m on signings, despite the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
