When Kurt Zouma broke out as a young Chelsea defender under Jose Mourinho in 2015, he looked like a talent that would go on to achieve great things at the club. However, a cruciate ligament injury marred his progress at the club, and after recovering from a long-term injury, a series of loan spells took him away from the club.
After impressing on loan for Stoke City and Everton, Zouma returned to the club last season. Despite being given much playing opportunities, Zouma still didn’t look his best and Chelsea fans weren’t too impressed.
However, Zouma is now looking the part this season, and his performance has shown that he can be relied on.
The injection of Thiago Silva to the Chelsea defence has impacted massively on Zouma, and there has been an injection of calm and solidity in his game.
Zouma has been a strong force in the air and has won 74.5 per cent of his duels this season in the league, which puts him among the top 20 players in Europe.
Having scored four goals already this season, another part of his game has well improved, as he’s also proving a threat in the opposition box, reminding us of the days of John Terry.
Kurt Zouma will definitely have a long-term presence in the Chelsea defence, and we are definitely pleased with the defender he has turned out to become.
