Reece James has been having a good time in the Chelsea first team this season, but his performance against Leicester City was far from impressive.
In the build up to the Foxes second goal, the Chelsea right-back failed to notice the threat of James Maddison on time and track back to avert danger, thus leading to the Foxes midfielder beating Edouard Mendy with ease for Leicester City’s second goal.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp slammed Chelsea’s defending for the second goal and was particularly critical of James error.
“What you can’t account for is bad defending,” Jamie Redknapp told Sky Sports at half-time.
“He doesn’t look at it, he doesn’t spot it, and then it’s a great finish from James Maddison. This is a player I really like, he has all the qualities. But the basics of learning how to be a right back are going to be so important for this man.
“When you’re a right back, you need to think of the worse-case scenario. He doesn’t, he gambles. You can’t do that as a defender.
“By that time it’s too late. You can’t walk in this game. He’s a knowledgeable boy who wants to get better and I’m sure he will.
“Leicester have been more streetwise than Chelsea. They have that little bit more devilment, that bit of knowhow that Chelsea have not had.”
