Former Chelsea and Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has revealed Thomas Tuchel’s biggest challenge as Chelsea boss.
According to Johnson, Tuchel’s biggest challenge as Chelsea boss will be finding his best team.
Johnson told Cheltenham Guides: “His biggest challenge will be finding his best team. There’s a lot of new faces that have come in recently and it’s going to take time for him to get to know the players.
“He’ll have an idea of the players he likes. This was Lampard’s issue, there were so many good players that came through the door at once but only 11 can play and there are quite a few players that are similar too.
“When a new manager comes in, everyone reacts differently by whether they are playing, their age and what stage they’re at in their career.
“Some players that are not playing are rubbing their hands together when a new manager comes in thinking they’ve got a chance to show what they can do and they might be back in the team, whereas other players that are playing every single week might be thinking “oh god” and they’ve got to prove themselves to the new manager again.
“That Chelsea seat is the hottest seat in world football so the manager isn’t going to risk it because he could be out of a job in six months.
“He is going to pick the players that he can rely on, he won’t be put off if this is one of the young guys, but at the same time, I’d be surprised if he goes to one of the young guys as someone he can trust early on. I hope this doesn’t hinder their development.
“I don’t think people can blame Lampard for holding players back or not giving them the chance to go and express themselves – the players should be doing that themselves. I don’t think the players were misfiring because of Lampard.”
