Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted that one of the things that made him successful as a player was his fighting spirit.

The 42-year-old manager spent 13 years of his playing career with Chelsea, and while he started out as an average player, he went on to become one of the greatest midfielders in Premier League history.

With Chelsea currently in a dire situation, Lampard has revealed that his fighting spirit will help see him through this difficult period as a manager.

“I’m a fighter first and foremost,” he said.

“I managed to make a career out of the game as a player and when I packed up, I could easily have stayed in the media or come out of football completely but I got back involved with a desire to be successful.

“I didn’t have the blinkers on. I knew there would be tough times and things you couldn’t control like you did as a player.

“I love the job and I love the fact that if you can fight your way out of those tough times – that’s me and the players – it’s the best feeling in football.”

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
