Frank Lampard’s job as Chelsea has come under scrutiny since the 3-1 defeat suffered against Manchester City.

Chelsea had dropped from 3rd in the league to 9th place, and Lampard’s job is no longer safe.

With the season already midway gone, the likes of Rafa Benitez and Andriy Shevchenko have been linked with the Chelsea job on a temporary basis.

Meanwhile, Paul Merson has delivered his verdict that there would be no point sacking Lampard to appoint Benitez or Shevchenko at this stage of the season.

In his column for Sky Sports, Merson, Merson analysed: “If Chelsea don’t beat Fulham, should they sack Frank Lampard? It depends what Chelsea want this year.

“It’s alright saying: ‘Let’s get rid of Frank’ but who comes in? Do they go back in for Rafa Benitez? If you’re going to bring in Andriy Shevchenko, what’s the difference?”

“It’s the same as Lampard, he hasn’t managed world-class players, and will need time.”
