It has been claimed that one of the hottest coaches outside of Europe twice turned down the chance to become Chelsea manager.

River Plate boss Marcelo Gallardo twice turned down the chance to become Chelsea boss, in 2016 and after Maurizio Sarri left for Juventus.

This is according to former River footballer and friend of Marcelo Gallardo, Leonardo Astrada.

Astrada revealed on ESPN via Marca that Chelsea strongly sought Gallardo out in 2016 before Antonio Conte was appointed and also in 2019 before Frank Lampard was appointed.

Gallardo also recently turned down an offer from FC Barcelona to take over the Spanish side due to the timing. The Argentine tactician believed a departure to Barcelona would’ve left the Buenos Aires-based club in a difficult position.
