While addressing the media ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League tie with Atletico Madrid, Chelsea skipper Cesar Azpilicueta admitted that being subbed off as a sub is never nice, following Thomas Tuchel’s decision to take off Callum Hudson-Odoi 30 minutes after bringing him on for the second-half.
Tuchel had since had clear-the-air talks with the young winger, and Azpilicueta has gone on to hail the attitude of Hudson-Odoi in training after the incident.
He said: “Obviously it is not nice to come on and be subbed after 25 or 30 minutes, that is very obvious and the manager made it clear, and what was important was to see his reaction afterwards.
“There was a positive reaction and I am sure he will get better and be stronger. He is a young lad and when you face this kind of situation, the most important thing is the reaction and straightaway the next day in training, the manager said the incident was already talked through and that was it.
“We have another challenge and Callum is a strong boy and I am sure he will get better. He is a very important player for us as we saw in the recent games, when he has played every game under the new manager.”
