The guys at the BT Sport studio didn’t seem too impressed with the performance of Timo Werner as Chelsea went on to beat Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the Champions League clash on Tuesday night.
Rio Ferdinand was critical of Werner’s performance, while former Chelsea star Joe Cole asked for patience with him.
Joe Cole likened Werner to former Arsenal star Theo Walcott, who had such impressive pace but never really got going until the latter part of his career.
“It was like a young Theo Walcott, wasn’t it?” said the former Chelsea man.
“When you used to watch Theo play he was so exciting, so much talent, but it wasn’t until the latter stages of his career when he put it all together and started scoring more goals regularly.
“We mustn’t – and we’re not – going to give up on Timo Werner, it’s early days and there is so much scope there because he has got some natural, raw ability.
“But I reckon with good coaches – and he has got good coaches – he will start to kick on, but they just need to be patient with him.”
