Luis Suarez was expected to be the star of the Atletico Madrid team, but the Chelsea defence ensured that the former Barca star was kept quiet all game.
A frustrated Suarez had one encounter with Antonio Rudiger in the first leg of the round of 16 fixture at the National Arena Stadium in Bucharest on Tuesday night.
In one particular moment of play, Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger put up a commanding display as he marsahlled the ball out of play, much to the annoyance of the former Liverpool man. In retaliation, Suarez pinched his opponent’s leg and appeared to kick out at the German in an unsavoury moment.
The duo would later square up at each other, as Rudiger was clearly angry with his antics. But Suarez eventually laughed him off and then pushed him on his chest.
Referee Dr. Felix Brych kept things simple and decided against issuing a card to both players, but Suarez action was well criticised on social media.
One Twitter user wrote: “Suarez is a vile, disgusting human. A grown man pinching another person.”
A second tweeted: “Why do commentators glorify what Suarez does. Constantly laughing and lauding him when he holds his face when no contact is made, kick players after the ball, pinching players.”
A third added: “Why is Suarez so f**king weird? What’s he pinching Rudiger’s leg for??”
