It’s a fresh start for the Chelsea players under Thomas Tuchel, as the new boss is giving out play time to every player to prove themselves under him.
The Chelsea boss made a surprise call to hand Kepa Arrizabalaga a rare Premier League start, in the game against Newcastle.
Kepa hasn’t been given opportunities in the Premier League since the signing of Edouard Mendy, and after impressing against Barnsley, the Blues boss decided to give him another shot in goal.
Kepa was barely tested all through the match, and he did okay when called into action.
Analysing the two goalkeepers, former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher revealed that Mendy is the better shot stopper, but Kepa is better with ball distribution.
He told Sky Sports: “Mendy is a better goalkeeper – we’ve seen that since he’s come in – but he’s not as good with his feet as Kepa.
“I think the manager wants to have a look but I also think the hierarchy are asking whether Tuchel can get something out of Kepa. I don’t expect it to last too long.”
