New Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has had a bit of an idea of how he wants to set up the Chelsea team, and it has been different from Frank Lampard’s era.

One player who had enjoyed playing time under the new boss is Callum Hudson-Odoi, with the 20-year-old having started all three games under Tuchel.

However, Chelsea defender Reece James only started for the first time in the win over Tottenham. The young fullback has been hailed as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League of late, but he may need to impress his new boss.

Rio Ferdinand has now revealed his surprise that Reece James is only just starting for the first time under Tuchel.

Ferdinand said: “He’s a top player and I’ll be honest, I was very surprised he didn’t start as soon as Tuchel came in.

“If he’s watching the videos, this kid is up there with the best right-backs in the league.

“He’s a young kid got great attitude and his delivery of the ball is phenomenal and as an all-round package as a right-back he’s got a lot.”

Rio Ferdinand however believes that there’re still some areas for James to improve on.

“He’s got work to do, defensively he can improve but he’s a young player,” Ferdinand added.

“He needs that time and that tutoring which I’m sure he’ll get now from this manager.

“He’s one of the players Frank was most impressed with when he got the manager’s job.”
