Chelsea have a goal to protect at the Bridge on Wednesday night, after beating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in the first leg in Bucharest.
A draw will be enough for Chelsea to go through to the quarter-finals, but it definitely won’t come easy against an Atletico Madrid side who are known for their doggedness.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid star Marcos Llorente has looked back at their victory over Liverpool last year, as a reminder to what they can do in Europe.
The Spanish side were behind at Anfield in extra time of the second leg, despite taking a one-goal lead from the first leg of that tie. Liverpool squandered a 2-0 lead, as Simeone’s side weathered the storm and ended up scoring three times in extra-time to progress to the next round.
Marcos Llorente, who was the scorer of two of those goals against Liverpool, has warned Chelsea and also urged his teammates to remember that game.
“We have had big games when things get ugly,” he told Marca. “We have to remember what we did on the day of Liverpool, that we are capable of that. I am sure that we will go for it and get the win.”
Llorente also spoke about the mood in the Atleti camp, adding: “The team is excited, mentally, conscious of the game we come into. It’s crucial, we are working well and we will go out to have a good game.”
