At just 22, Mason Mount is already being seen as a future Chelsea captain, as his leadership quality and selfless nature is already evident in the Chelsea team.

It’s not only for the Blues Mount has been impressive, as the England international has been a top performer also for his country.

The Three Lions eased to a 5-0 victory over football minnows San Marino on Thursday night, and England boss Gareth Southgate was pleased with his team’s display.

Goals from James Ward-Prowse, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Raheem Sterling saw the Three Lions go into the half-time break with a 3-0 lead. Calvert-Lewin completed his brace in the second half and Ollie Watkins scored late on to make it 5.

Southgate was very pleased with the team’s display and also singled out three of his England players for special praise, with Mount getting the most praise from the Three Lions boss.

“I think we did as well as we could, really,” Southgate told ITV.

“I was really pleased with not only the way we moved the ball quickly and the interchange of positions but the way we pressed when we lost the ball highlighted the mentality of the team for the full 90 minutes.

“So of course it’s an opponent we should beat but I thought they went about the job really well.

When asked who impressed him the most, Southgate replied: “I thought there were lots of good individual performances, we said that there was high individual motivation as well as the team and it’ll be difficult to pick one out.

“I thought midfield players moved the ball really well, Kalvin Phillips, I was really pleased for him he’s used the ball well but his athleticism around the pitch was good.

“Mason in the first half, excellent, I thought set the tone. Good to see Jesse looking like he’s enjoying his football again. So I thought there were a lot of good things.”
