Many were surprised when former boss Frank Lampard gave Mason Mount the captain’s armband in the FA Cup clash against Luton Town.
The game against Luton was Lampard’s last game in charge of the club, and Mount gave a good performance in the 3-1 victory.
Current boss Thomas Tuchel decided to tow the same line in the FA Cup yet again, as he gave Mount the role of captain against Sheffield United.
Tuchel made nine changes from the Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid in midweek, with Mateo Kovacic and Kurt Zouma the only players keeping their place in the line-up.
Mount who missed the Atletico clash through suspension, started the FA Cup clash on Sunday, and this time, as captain.
Explaining his decision, Tuchel told BBC One prior to kick-off: “Our captains are not on the pitch, obviously, Azpi, Jorginho, Thiago Silva, N’Golo, so Mason was already captain in one of the FA Cup rounds, so we’ve kept the momentum going for him.
“He deserves it, leadership isn’t a question of age and he has everything you need to lead the team out here in this game. I’m happy for him and I’m sure he’ll show up.”
After the game, Tuchel was pleased with his performance as he played in three different roles and the German tactician hailed Mount’s performance as captain.
“It was not easy today for him,” Tuchel told Chelsea TV.
“But yeah, it should tell him that we wanted to have him on the pitch.
“And it is a big advantage that he can play in more than only one position.”
He added: “Another win, another clean-sheet with him as a captain.”
