Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has already confirmed Mateo Kovacic will be in the starting team for the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
Chelsea will be without the suspended Mason Mount and Jorginho for the tie against Diego Simeone’s side after the pair picked up three bookings in the competition.
Tuchel has admitted that Kovacic was rested for the Leeds game so he can start against Atletico.
“I don’t like to do this but in central midfield, we will miss Jorgi and Mason [against Atletico Madrid], so we took the decision to give Kova a rest,” he told BT Sport prior to kick-off against Leeds.
“We normally don’t like this but we have two suspensions in midfield so we made changes.”
Meanwhile, a goalless draw or any form of draw against Atletico Madrid will be enough to see Chelsea through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
All the Blues must do is avoid defeat against the La Liga table toppers to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League — a feat Chelsea haven’t achieved in the Champions League since the 2013/14 season where they were beaten in the semi-final by PSG.
In their past four Round of 16 ties in the competition, Chelsea have come up against Paris Saint-Germain (2014/15, 2015/16), Barcelona (2017/18) and Bayern Munich (2019/20).
