Chelsea lost to West Brom 5-2 on Saturday afternoon, as the Blues had to play with a man down following the red card to Thiago Silva in the first half.
Chelsea were a goal ahead, but the sending off of the Brazilian changed the context of the game, as the Baggies came from a goal down to win the game 5-2.
Having received a first yellow card, Thiago Silva was shown a second yellow card for a challenge on West Bromwich Albion midfielder Okay Yokuslu.
In reaction to his tackle after the game, the Brazilian admitted that he didn’t mean to tackle the West Brom player, but to block the ball.
Silva said: “I believe it was not an expulsion move, I haven’t seen the video yet, but the referee made his decision and we can’t change what happened.
“I assume my responsibility for the expulsion, which unfortunately directly affected the result of the game.
“Now we have to join our forces, because Wednesday it will be another battle. Come on Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has said he can understand why David Coote sent off Thiago Silva.
Speaking as part of Sky Sports’ Ref Watch feature, he said: “It’s was a reckless challenge. He’s out of control.
“The referee thought it was a second yellow and dismissed him; seeing the pictures I can understand why.”
