Chelsea spent £47.5 on Timo Werner to end the club’s scoring problem, as the Blues had lacked a goalscorer who can deliver 20+ goals per season since the departure of Diego Costa.

Werner has shown his brilliance and quality at times, but his finishing has been far from good enough.

11 goals in 45 matches is a far cry from what Chelsea fans and the board expect to see, but the German has a good goal involvement in terms of assists and creating chances for a goal.

Werner was guilty of another glaring miss in the Champions League tie against Real Madrid, and according to former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman, Werner has shown Chelsea cannot rely on him to be their reliable source of goals.

“Everybody labels Timo Werner as not a natural finisher and yet again tonight it’s been proven right to a certain extent,” McManaman told BT Sport.

You still feel he will not score enough goals. That first one today, it was a good save but he should’ve scored, he should’ve set Chelsea on their way to a victory tonight.

“If you’re Tammy Abraham, or Giroud, you’re thinking, ‘what do I need to do to play tonight?’”
