Chelsea sold Tariq Lamptey to Brighton in January 2019, and the Blues academy product has been a big hit for the Seagulls since joining them.
Lamptey refused to sign a contract extension with Chelsea as he could not earn a starting role at the club, and was behind Reece James and Cesar Azpilicueta. He was eventually sold for a meagre £3m fee.
Lamptey’s success at Brighton was instant, and now he’s being linked with a move to bigger clubs in the Premier League and even Europe.
Everton and Arsenal are the clubs believed to be most keen on signing Lamptey, as the Toffees see him as a long-term replacement for Seamus Coleman. According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are keen on signing Lamptey this summer as they prepare to let Hector Bellerin leave at the end of the season.
Chelsea fans will not be pleased to see their academy product play for a rival club, and Chelsea couldn’t insert a release clause to his deal. However, unknown to many, Chelsea were able to insert an undisclosed sell-on clause in Lamptey’s deal. This means that the club will earn an unknown percentage of any future transfer fee Brighton receive for Lamptey.
