Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel thought hard before selecting his team to face Porto on Wednesday night.

Chelsea were well beaten by West Brom 5-2 on Saturday, with Thiago Silva getting a red card in that game.

Before the West Brom game, Silva hadn’t played a competitive game in two months, and looked a bit rusty against the Baggies.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel decided to drop Thiago Silva to the bench for the game against Porto. Tuchel used the regular back three of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Just before the game, Tuchel explained his starting lineup as he revealed that the Brazilian wasn’t fully fit for a start against Porto.

“Well, he had only half an hour and all the other guys are totally fit,” Tuchel told BT Sport.

“It’s not the moment to improve your fitness level in a quarter-final.

“We trust the guys and we are clearly aware that we need 100 per cent physical level.

“Thiago is a super important player but is not fully fit for 90 minutes on highest level.”
