Jose Mourinho has today been relieved of his duties as Tottenham Hotspur manager, as Chelsea’s London rivals decided to cut ties with the Portuguese.

Mourinho was appointed in November 2019 following the sack of Mauricio Pochettino, and was tasked with uplifting a Spurs side that struggled in Pochettino’s final season. In his first season, he lifted them from 16th to 6th, but results haven’t gone as expected this season.

Some reports claim that Mourinho fell out with club chief Daniel Levy over a disagreement about the club’s involvement in the European Super League. However, Levy has released a statement which suggests that Mourinho was sacked because of performance issues.

In a statement released on Monday morning, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy said: “Jose and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a club.

“Jose is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic. On a personal level I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.

“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution.”
