Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino has warned Chelsea about the quality of Karim Benzema ahead of the Champions League semi-final clash against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.
The Frenchman just needed half a chance to score for the Los Blancos in the first leg, and Cascarino has hailed him as one of the best strikers in the world.
According to the former Blue, Chelsea must be wary of the threat of the Real Madrid striker, and he also warned about the quality of midfield duo Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.
“Chelsea must keep a very close eye on Karim Benzema, who is probably the most underrated centre forward to have played in my lifetime,” Cascarino told The Times.
“He’s alongside Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane as the best players at leading the line. If you stop Benzema, you pretty much stop Real Madrid: he has scored 28 goals for them in all competitions this season; Casemiro is second with only seven.
“If you allow him space he will punish you, as he showed with his goal in the first leg.
“Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have vast experience at this level and they are perfectly capable of seizing control of the midfield for Real. It was only the brilliance of N’Golo Kanté that foiled them in the first leg, and the Frenchman will be required to do the same at Stamford Bridge.
“Kroos and Modric are really good passers but they never got going in the first match. I thought Kanté was back to his very best, disrupting play and constantly robbing the ball.”
