Thomas Tuchel brought back the 3-4-3 system upon his appointment as Chelsea manager, and it helped turn around Chelsea’s fortune for good.

Chelsea’s defence shipped in loads of goals under former boss Frank Lampard, and the defence seemed too leaky, with the midfield looking too exposed at times.

However, Chelsea’s defence has been very solid since Tuchel came with his 3-4-3 system, and the midfield has had a good balance. The Chelsea team has kept 18 clean sheets in the 29 matches under the German’s watch, and Kovacic believes 3-4-3 suits the Chelsea team perfectly.

He said: “I think the team changed completely, how we approached the games. We were more confident, solid at the back and not conceding a lot of goals, not conceding many chances. We became quite solid and we were playing quite confidently.

“We changed to a back three and I think it suits us really well with the defenders we have. It was a big change, a good change, which improved from game to game, we are doing well in this system. So I think he changed a lot and this team can only become better in my opinion.”
