Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour has proven on the big stage that he can perform at a high level, but breaking into the senior national team has been a challenge for the 19-year-old.
Gilmour had impressed under Frank Lampard last season and was now becoming a mainstay in the Chelsea team, before injury held him down for over four months.
After recovering at the start of the season, Lampard began to introduce him slowly back into the team, but the sacking of the Chelsea legend meant Gilmour had to start all over again under a new manager.
Thomas Tuchel didn’t trust Gilmour until recently when the teenager impressed in some league games. He was phenomenal against Manchester City, and Scotland boss Steve Clarke had seen enough to give him his first senior national team invitation.
Gilmour’s invitation to the Euros has sparked massive reaction from fans, players and the media, and it’s been long overdue.
