Timo Werner has been slammed for missing easy chances, as his goalscoring rate at Chelsea have been drastically poor.
The 25-year-old scored 36 goals in all competitions for RB Leipzig last season, but he has managed just 11 goals in over 40 games this season.
Despite his lack of goals, Werner is still Thomas Tuchel’s first choice striker, with Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud hardly getting a starting role in the past two months.
Despite Werner’s big miss against Real Madrid, former Chelsea defender Mario Melchiot came to the defence of the German international.
According to Melchiot, Werner is always a threat even though he doesn’t score, and he keeps defenders on their toes.
Speaking to talkSPORT after Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Real Madrid in their Champions League semi-final first leg, Melchiot said: “Werner brought something to the team that nobody else can bring.
“If you look at the way Chelsea were playing, look at how one man can keep a back line busy. That was Werner and his pace. They were always worried about him when they were pressing.”
He added: “Look how many times Kante become free in the middle of the park because they were so worried about Werner that they couldn’t press all the way through.”
