Player ratings: Aston Villa 2 vs 1 Chelsea

Chelsea needed to beat Aston Villa and finish the season in third spot, but the Blues lost the game and were lucky to still make top four as Tottenham did Chelsea a favour to beat Leicester City 4-2 at the King Power Stadium.

Mendy: Was taken off at half-time through injury after colliding with the post. Couldn’t have saved Traore’s goal. 6/10

Reece James: Was used as a right centre-back yet again, and he was solid at the back. But his forward attacking impetus was missed. Did brilliantly when moved to the midfield as well. 7/10

Thiago Silva: Had a difficult evening against Ollie Watkins. Did decently, but it wasn’t an easy game. 6/10

Rudiger: Decent performance but didn’t seem to be at his best. 6/10

Azpilicueta: Started at right wing-back yet again, but seemed exposed in the second half. Was sent off late in the game. 5/10

Chilwell: Spent the game marauding the left flank and looked really dangerous until he scored that late goal. 7/10

Jorginho: Was overrun in midfield, and made a clumsy tackle on Bertrand Traore to concede a penalty. 4/10

Kovacic: Back from injury and didn’t seem to be at his best against Villa. Lost balls easily and didn’t have confidence to push forward with the ball. 5/10

Mount: Got into some good goalscoring positions but couldn’t find the net. 6/10

Pulisic: Didn’t look his best and missed a very good chance after the restart. 6/10

Werner: Never looked like scoring and didn’t look sharp all game. 5/10

Kepa: Couldn’t do much as he conceded from a needless penalty. Had nothing to do afterwards. 6/10

Ziyech: Replaced Jorginho on the hour mark and brought a spark to the attack. 6/10

Havertz: Came in for Kovacic and did okay. 6/10

Chelsea is more than just a football club to me; it's a passion I share, and my affinity with the Chelsea badge is one that will last forever. As far as watching my favourite team is concerned, I'd rather miss a meal than miss a Chelsea game.
