Christian Pulisic started and scored against Real Madrid in the first leg in Spain last week but was named among the subs for the second-leg at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel opted to start Kai Havertz ahead of Pulisic.

Tuchel suggested Havertz’s height was a factor in picking the German over Pulisic in his starting XI against Real Madrid.

“Christian got a bad message today unfortunately, but I am pretty sure we need more than 11 players to sneak through today and it is good to have Christian from the bench,” Tuchel told BT Sport.

“Kai gives us a little bit of height against the set-pieces and maybe in fast attacks can keep the ball.”
